Water source heat pump guide

Water source heat pumps work by taking heat (thermal energy) from a water source and converting this into hot water and heating for the property. These type of heat pumps work in cold temperatures and are for properties near a body of water (such as a lake, stream or borehole). Electricity is required to operate these heat pumps however only 25% of usage will be electricity whilst the other 75% will be energy generated from the water source – emissions are therefore reduced.

Installations vary depending on the size of the property and volume of the water source. Pipes are installed underground which is where the heating process takes place. There are two types of systems – closed-loop systems & open-loop systems. The heating process differs depending on the type of system that is installed. The system will not be noticeable during or after installation as it will be submerged under water.

Water source heat pumps are usually more efficient than air and ground source heat pumps. This is due to consistency in water temperatures outside however if your water source is prone to freezing over, this may affect the efficiency. This will be assessed during inspection by your installer.

Closed-loop system

Where there is a sufficient body of water close to the property, a closed-loop system could be installed. Underground piping would be installed and routed into the water.

Closed-loop systems tend to be cheaper than open-loop systems.

Open-loop system

Open loops actively pull water into the system for operation. The water needs to be clean so that the system can draw and filter this to and from the main water source. Due to these specific conditions, these systems tend to be more expensive than closed-loop systems.

Advantages of water source heat pumps

  • Heating and hot water source for your property
  • Great for properties near a water source
  • Quiet whilst running
  • Heat pumps can sit inside or outside
  • Maintenance is minimal
  • Works with current or new radiators and underfloor heating
  • No extensive digging or drilling required for installation
